SECRETS FROM THE BRAINS OF 13 CREATIVE GENIUSES

HERE'S WHAT THE NEUROSCIENTIST WHO STUDIES THE SCIENCE OF GENIUS FOUND WHEN SHE SCANNED THE BRAINS OF 13 OF TODAY'S BRIGHTEST CREATIVE MINDS.

In 1963, Nancy Andreasen was the first female tenure-tracked English professor at the University of Iowa. Soon after, her first book about the poet John Donne was accepted by a publisher. Her career was off to a smashing start, but she had a nagging feeling.

"Who would this book help?" she couldn't stop herself from thinking. "What if I channeled the effort and energy I’d invested in it into a career that might save people’s lives?"

Within a month, she enrolled in the medical school at the University of Iowa. Today she is a leading neuroscientist, marrying her love for literature and the arts with her fascination in how the brain works. Andreasen studies what some call "the science of genius"--trying to unpack the elements that make up the brightest creative minds. It's not a high IQ that indicates creative genius, she's found. In her research, Andreasen has explored the link between mental illness and creativity, finding a strong connection between the two.

THERE IS A STRONG CONNECTION BETWEEN MENTAL ILLNESS AND CREATIVITY.

In her latest study, which she recently wrote about for the Atlantic, Andreasen scanned the brains of 13 of the most famous scientists, mathematicians, artists, and writers alive today. Her subjects included Fields Medalists, Pulitzer Prize winners, and six Nobel laureates. Among them are filmmaker George Lucas, mathematician William Thurston, and novelist Jane Smiley. Andreasen delved into their family and personal histories, also studying the structural and functional characteristics of their brains using neuroimaging.

The study was challenging given how hard it is to pin down the creative process. "Creativity, of course, cannot be distilled into a single mental process, and it cannot be captured in a snapshot--nor can people produce a creative insight or thought on demand," she writes.

Andreasen had to find a way to study these creative minds at work. She hooked them up to an MRI scan and gave them different word association, picture association, and pattern recognition tasks. "You cannot force creativity to happen--every creative person can attest to that," writes Andreasen. "But the essence of creativity is making connections and solving puzzles."

In her findings she has distilled some key patterns in the minds of creative geniuses. They include:

CREATIVE PEOPLE LIKE TO TEACH THEMSELVES RATHER THAN BE TAUGHT BY OTHERS.

Think of all the creative geniuses who were high school drop-outs--Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg. Andreasen found that her subjects were autodidacts--they preferred figuring things out independently, rather than being spoon-fed information.

"Because their thinking is different, my subjects often express the idea that standard ways of learning and teaching are not always helpful and may even be distracting, and that they prefer to learn on their own," she writes.

MANY CREATIVE PEOPLE LOVE BOTH THE ARTS AND THE SCIENCES.

There's a mentality out there that you have to choose between either the arts or the sciences in your studies and career. But Andreasen found that some of the greatest creative minds are polymaths, sharing a love for both.

"The arts and the sciences are seen as separate tracks, and students are encouraged to specialize in one or the other," writes Andreasen. "If we wish to nurture creative students, this may be a serious error."

CREATIVE PEOPLE PERSIST AGAINST SKEPTICISM AND REJECTION.

When you're coming up with new unheard-of ideas, you're pushing against the status quo. Rejection and skepticism are inevitable. It's what you do in the face of those that matters most.

Andreasen found that creative geniuses are resilient when presented with such skepticism. "They have to confront doubt and rejection," she writes. "And yet they have to persist in spite of that, because they believe strongly in the value of what they do."

What this persistence might breed, however, is psychic pain, says Andreasen, which can manifest as depression or anxiety.

CREATIVE GENIUSES HAVE CRAPPY IDEAS TOO.

Creative people have lots of ideas, but that doesn't mean all of them are worth pursuing. "Part of what comes with seeing connections no one else sees is that not all these connections actually exist," writes Andreasen. Still, a willingness to go after those ideas--to try them out, to resist the skepticism of others around you in order to find out if they are great, is essential.


As one of Andreasen's subjects, a scientist, told her: “Part of creativity is picking the little bubbles that come up to your conscious mind, and picking which one to let grow and which one to give access to more of your mind . . . then have that translate into action.”

The Body Language Of Creative Thinkers

COULD YOUR BODY LANGUAGE DURING AN INTERVIEW GIVE AWAY THE FACT THAT YOU'RE DUMB AND UNIMAGINATIVE? STANFORD SCIENTISTS THINK SO.


You can tell a lot about a person's mental state just by looking at their body language. Are they laid back, or fidgety? Are they happy, or sad? Are they confident, or shy? But one thing you can't detect is whether he or she is smart or dumb, creative or an unimaginative lump. Or can you?
A team at Stanford headed up by Jeremy Balienson, an associate professor in the communication department, has published new research, suggesting that people's creativity and ability to learn can be gauged by body language. Using an array of Microsoft Kinect 3-Dcameras to record and analyze the movements of subjects, the researchers performed two different tests to study the non-verbal cues of the intelligent and creative. Here's what they learned.
In the first study, the researchers chose one subject as a "teacher" and primed them on several principles of a subject they knew little about: water efficiency. The teacher was then tasked to impart what he or she had learned to another subject over a five-minute span. After, the student would take a test to show how much knowledge they had absorbed.
What the Stanford scientists learned was that the more exaggerated a student's upper-body movements were while they were being taught, the less likely they were to score well on the test afterwards. "For our sample and our task, students with very extreme movements with their upper body tended to learn worse than others," Bailenson said. 
In the second test, researchers recorded the movements of paired subjects who were asked to brainstorm ways to improve water-conservation techniques. The more ideas they came up with, the more creative the duo was judged to be. In this test, what the researchers discovered is that the more synchronized two subjects were in their body movements, the more ideas they came up with.
While this study isn't useful for detecting creativity in a lone person, it could afford employers a new method to hire creative teams. "Imagine trying to hire pairs to work on a project," Balienson said. "Give your dozen candidates a two-minute test to see which pairs synchronize and which ones don't. So now you've got a basically innovative team detector."
Although Balienson and his team caution that their results may be subject to bias, they do give employers new tools in which to design tests to gauge the intelligence and creativity of potential hires. If you want to hire creative thinkers, interview them in pairs, and beware of the over-eager interviewee nodding, bucking, and jiving when you're trying to tell him or her about your company. That guy's probably a little slow.

Trabajar fuera de la oficina trae creatividad y eficiencia

Abrir espacios laborales fuera de los horarios y la empresa física se traduce en innovación comercial.

Algunos expertos en el área empresarial sostienen que la flexibilidad horaria en el trabajo y la no asistencia al espacio común y físico de la compañía perturban el buen desempeño laboral y la producción operativa.

Sin embargo, este planteamiento está siendo desvirtuado, pues hoy, se ve a muchos ejecutivos trabajando desde cafeterías, en un aeropuerto o camino a una cita de negocios.

Por ello, se torna importante reconocer si el alejamiento del trabajo localizado permite incentivar la creatividad, lo cual, sumado a las ventajas en tecnología y medios virtuales puede generar una modalidad de trabajo menos repetitivo, más dinámico y colaborador.

Cabe decir que el 82 por ciento de las 100 mejores compañías para, trabajar segpun ‘Fortune 2011’ brindan a sus empleados la oportunidad de laboral lejos de las instalaciones de la empresa, un termómetro importante que se une a una investigación, de este año, que indica que el 77 por ciento de los trabajadores son más productivos fuera de la oficina que dentro de ella.

Este estudio de la multinacional Citrix Systems tomó una muestra de 350 trabajadores alrededor del mundo para verificar un concepto, que merece ser tenido en cuenta especialmente por las empresas latinoamericanas pymes, por su capacidad en infraestructura.

Igualmente, se conoció que el 79 por ciento de los encuestados trabaja fuera de la oficina: el 52 por ciento lo hace 1 o 2 días a la semana, y el 27 por ciento, 3 o más días.

Además, la creatividad se activa mucho más cuando se trabaja por fuera de la oficina, una experiencia, por ejemplo, que la organización Google ha tomado como dirección operativa, rompiendo con la oficina tradicional y abriendo espacios de discusión y trabajo
